Who are you grateful for? I had a teacher in middle school, we didn’t get along at all, he was trying to teach, and I was trying to be a class clown. After class one day, instead of sending me to the principal’s office (again), he looked me straight in the eyes and said: “You don’t have to be the class clown for your classmates to like you, you are a natural leader.” It was the first time I had been told by an adult, (other than my parents) that I was powerful. The funny thing is we still never got along. It took 18 years for me to gather the courage to call him on the phone and say Thank you. He had no clue. How would he, I was a teenager and a jerk. It felt really good to give him something he deserved… my gratitude.
Quick Timeline:
2003-2006: For more than 3 years, I’ve had the grand intention of creating a documentary on Gratitude (changing the world), but I did nothing.
December 28th, 2006: I began writing my list of goals to accomplish in 2007. There it was again, Documentary on Gratitude. However, on this day, I went one step further; I broke it down, started brainstorming, listing ideas.
Jan 14, 2007: My neighbor told me to watch this new DVD called “the Secret”.
Jan 22-24, 2007: I attended a seminar with like-minded people. Every person had 20 minutes to share something with the group and receive feedback and support. I sheepishly shared all my thoughts. The feedback was nothing but positive and filled with great suggestions that I never would have thought of . One suggestion was to have an open line for people to call and share…
Feb 14, 2007: www.callingforgratitude.com was officially up and running.
Feb 16, 2007: My mom emailed Oprah and Ellen Degeneres… still no word from Oprah's people…yet. The producers of the Ellen Show have shown some interest!
We wanted to create a movement to prove that when given a chance, people rise up and respond in myspace like numbers. The special and unique twist that this movement / Viral has that makes C4G stand out from others, is that simply watching the video is not enough to create change. So our call to action is getting people to call and pay gratitude forward.
Research recently has proven that the emotion of gratitude can change a person’s DNA…We simply know first hand that giving gratitude feels good, it feels right, it feels natural, and it can even save a life.
I am fortunate that my middle school teacher was still living to hear it directly from my heart. If possible, we strongly encourage you to not stop at calling our phone line. Go one step further and share it directly with the person who has helped you.
Peace,
Justin and the C4G Team
